Governor Polis Signs Cage-free Egg Bill Into Law

With a stroke of Governor Polis’s pen House Bill 20-1343 (Egg-laying Hen Confinement Standards) became law on Wednesday. While this is a significant event, equally important is the fact that World Animal Protection withdrew Ballot Initiative #314 (Concerning Farm Animal Confinement).

Although the Colorado Livestock Association took a neutral position on the legislation it was opposed to the initiative. As you will read in The Colorado Sun article (below) the initiative was much more onerous in its spacing requirements, implementation dates and applied not just to chickens, but also swine and veal.

All Colorado eggs must be cage-free by 2025 under law passed to head off stricter ballot measure
