At the most recent CLA producer meeting in Fort Morgan, Colorado’s State Veterinarian, Dr. Maggie Baldwin, shared updates from the CDA Animal Health Division and efforts to enhance advanced animal disease traceability.
She reviewed the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which has affected both commercial and backyard poultry farms across 43 states. More than 4.7 million domestic birds in Colorado were impacted, and more than 85% of table egg layers were lost.
Dr. Baldwin expressed the importance for livestock producers to continue improving their Foreign Animal Disease preparedness, including response planning exercises, industry coordination, and site-specific planning. To view Dr. Baldwin’s presentation, click here.
CDA Resources:
CDA Emergency Preparedness and Response website – The department is continuing to update these resources, but there are good preparedness plans and resources to get started. They are working on getting the newly revamped Ag Emergency Liaison program updated and added to the website.
Industry Resources:
The Secure Food Supply Plans were developed in collaboration between the livestock industries, state and federal government officials, and two universities: Iowa State University and Kansas State University. They provide guidance for livestock producers to voluntarily prepare before a foreign animal disease outbreak to limit exposure of their animals through enhanced biosecurity.
